We met in York, but we fell in love in Athens
We first crossed paths at a salsa class as university students. We briefly danced together, and although we both now admit there was a spark, we went our separate ways. It wasn't until months later at Manchester Airport - waiting for a flight to Greece - that we finally reconnected. Between the talking, laughter, and delayed flight announcements, something clicked. We ended up meeting several times in Athens that summer; from coffee in Plaka to hiking the Acropolis and sharing beers with friends until sunrise on Mount Lycavettus, it played out like a movie.
Since then, life has been one big adventure. We've built our lives in the UK, traveled the world, and survived more flat tires than we'd care to admit - learning along the way that the best adventures in life are the ones where you're with your favorite person.
For our 10th anniversary, we drove from London to Athens and ended up in Santorini. Many have asked how I (Gabriela) didn't see the proposal coming. Well, that evening, Manos appeared to be frantically Googling restaurants and calling around to see if any prime sunset tables were left - just two hours before sundown. If anything, I was convinced he had completely forgotten our anniversary and was desperately trying to make up for it!
Later that evening, we stumbled upon a tiny chapel in Imerovigli overlooking the caldera. The only other person there was a photographer who asked Manos if he was "Jonathan." When we said no, and after some small talk, he offered to take a few photos of us while he waited for his client to show up. I was so busy following his instructions for 'the perfect shot' - and frankly, worrying that Jonathan would show up at any moment - that I didn't realize that it was all a ruse! When I turned around, Manos was on one knee.
The UK introduced us, but Greece saw us fall in love and get engaged. It feels only right to take the next step where it all began – and we couldn't imagine doing it without you.
